Cardinals go in search of a sweep
The St. Louis Cardinals will look to close out the Philadelphia Phillies when the two sides conclude their three-game set at Busch Stadium.
The Cardinals are 6/5 to win the World Series and the Phillies can be backed at 500/1.
Lance Lynn, who has lost four of his past five outings, heads to the hill for the hosts having already defeated the Phillies once this season. Back in April at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Lynn was in dazzling form holding the Phillies to just a single hit over seven innings in a 5-0 St. Louis victory.
Wednesday the Cardinals maintained their one and a half game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates with an 11-3 victory over the visitors. John Lannan (2-4) was chased after four innings having surrendered four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three to take the loss as Jake Westbrook (7-4) went seven strong innings to win his second in a row. The 35-year old right-hander allowed three runs on nine hits without walking a batter and struck out two, ably supported by a Cardinals offense that knocked out 16 hits on the evening.
Five games back of St. Louis, but still with a better record than Division leaders the Atlanta Braves or the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Cincinnati Reds concluded their visit to San Francisco with an 8-3 victory over the Giants at AT & T Park. It's now onto LA for the Reds as they continue their 10-game west coast road swing, a trip that will have 11 games after the weird make up scheduling quirk that saw the visitors technically play a 'home' game against the Giants while in San Francisco after the two sides were rained out at the Great American Ball Park back in July.
