Andy Murray admitted that he needs to deal better with the humid conditions at the US Open, having booked a place in the fourth round by seeing off Florian Mayer.

Murray overcame a slow start to defeat the German 7-6 6-2 6-2, before admitting that he had struggled with the humidity throughout the match.

I need to start matches a little bit quicker, I was a little bit slow out of the blocks.

The defending champion told reporters: "It was very, very humid. I was struggling with my breathing for most of the match.

"With the way that he plays, it was a tough match, especially at the beginning, but I started the second set well, started hitting the ball a little bit cleaner, was more aggressive after that and finished it well.

"I need to start matches a little bit quicker, I was a little bit slow out of the blocks."

Next up for Murray is Denis Istomin, with the Scot having won the only previous meeting with the Uzbek in Brisbane earlier this year, securing a 6-4 7-6 victory.

Murray is 1/25 to win again at Flushing Meadows and is 2/7 to win in straight sets, while Istomin is 11/2 to take the first set.

Elsewhere, Novak Djokovic and Tomas Berdych progressed with ease, with fifth seed Berdych a potential quarter-final opponent for Murray.

In the women's draw defending champion Serena Williams, 2/5 to retain her title, booked a quarter-final spot with a 6-4 6-1 win over fellow American Sloane Stephens.
