Monfils stuns fading Federer
Roger Federer's fall from grace continued in the Shanghai Masters after he slumped to a three-set defeat to Gael Monfils in the third round.
The former world number one has endured a difficult year and is currently seventh in the rankings.
Monfils, who won the match 6-4 6-7 6-3, had lost six of his previous seven matches against the Swiss star, although he did suffer a major wobble in the second set.
Federer trailed 5-3 before hitting back to win the set on a tie-break. However, his latest defeat means he is still not certain of playing in the ATP World Tour Finals for a 12th successive year.
Monfils faces either the top seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic or Fabio Fognini in the quarter-finals.
David Ferrer also suffered an early exit in Shanghai, slipping to defeat against Florian Mayer. Mayer knocked out the 2011 runner-up Ferrer 6-4 6-3 and will now face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the last eight. Tsonga is 3/10 to win the quarter-final, while Mayer can be backed at 5/2 to progress.
Tsonga, who is currently 11th in the ATP Race To London, saw off Kei Nishikori, beating the Japanese player 7-6 6-0.
Juan Martin del Potro moved into the quarter-finals when Tommy Haas withdrew from the tournament with a back injury.
If Tomas Berdych, 1/1 to beat Nicolas Almagro in the last eight, or del Potro reach Sunday's final they will qualify for the end-of-season World Tour Finals.
