GB move on to Italy showdown

Great Britain can look forward to a Davis Cup quarter-final away to Italy after Andy Murray put the seal on a fine 3-1 World Group victory over the USA in San Diego.

Murray made no mistake in putting the tie to bed with a four-set win over Sam Querrey, although he was made to work hard before subduing the big-serving American 7-6 6-7 6-1 6-3.

This is the first time I've been involved in a Davis Cup that we've had a chance of winning the competition.

And that sets GB up for a crack at the Italians, almost certainly on clay, with the winner of that tie in April moving on to a semi-final against the winner of the meeting of Switzerland and Kazakhstan.

The other side of the draw sees France take on Germany, while holders the Czech Republic will face Japan.

Wimbledon champion Murray, meanwhile, is excited about the prospects for GB, who he believes are real contenders to win the Davis Cup, while the Scot also believes that a second successive tie on clay will be of personal benefit for him

He told the BBC: "This is the first time I've been involved in a Davis Cup that we've had a chance of winning the competition.

"It's good for me to play on the clay. Often going into the clay season I haven't played any matches on it for 11 months.

Murray can be backed at 22/1 to win the French Open this year, with Rafael Nadal 6/4 and Novak Djokovic 11/8.
