Vickery set for Leeds deal

Brian McDermott says Joe Vickery's display against Wakefield Wildcats on Boxing Day could land him a deal with Leeds Rhinos.

The Australian is on trial with the Rhinos and scored two tries in their 40-26 victory over Wakefield. Vickery, whose move to Hull broke down last year, played for Gold Coast Titans' feeder club Tweed Head last season.

That's [the Wildcats game] now put him [Joe Vickery] in good shape for when the decision comes.

"That's [the Wildcats game] put him in a strong position," said Leeds coach McDermott.

"You can't be signing blokes on how they train but he has done everything asked of him so we were leaning that way anyway.

"That's now put him in good shape for when the decision comes."

Meanwhile, McDermott has praised the RFL's rule changes which were trialled during the Boxing Day match. The teams were able to reduce the number of players in a scrum, while the officials were able to continue the tackle count should there be a charge-down and allow teams the advantage to play on following handling errors.

"I like the new rules," added McDermott.

"The punishment for a charge-down if it doesn't come off has always been heavily weighted towards the team with the ball.

"The added man from the scrum will take some getting used to. I don't think there is a play out there just yet that will get the defence."

Leeds are 66/1 to win the regular Super League season in 2013 while Wigan are 100/1 and Warrington can be backed at 50/1.
