Mullins worried by Champagne Fever

Leading trainer Willie Mullins has put all his plans for Champagne Fever on ice for the time being.

The six-year-old was bitterly disappointing finishing 40 lengths behind the winner Rule The World at Naas last time out over two and a half miles.

We'll just have to wait and see how he is.

And his trainer was struggling to find reasons to excuse such a poor running and isn't sure when he may be seen out again.

He said: "We'll just have to wait and see how he is. He had two weeks off after his last disappointing run, so we are taking it day by day.

"On his last run he seemed to be ready to pull himself up early in the race, but then appeared to get a second wind and ran on again.

"He wasn't hammered over the last mile, so that may help him in his recovery process but that's why we have to wait and see.

"We will get a couple of bits of work into him this week and there's the Deloitte Novice Hurdle coming up next week, but I think that may come up a bit too soon for him."

Champagne Fever is 5/1 to win the Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham in March, with Dodging Bullets 9/1 and Waaheb 999/1.
