King surprised by Medinas victory

Top trainer Alan King admitted he was surprised that second string Medinas came out on top of No 1 stable hope Balder Succes in Saturday's Welsh Champion Hurdle.

And the result which saw the stable's lead jockey 'Choc' Thornton on the 'wrong one' has altered his plans for the Cheltenham Festival.

I think this means that we'll be looking at the Coral Cup for Medinas and the Pertemps may be another.

Medinas showed great courage to stay on in poor ground and put the race to bed inside the final furlong.

King had admitted before the race that 'Balder' may get am little panicked up in big fields and thus is was no surprise to see Thornton taking a wider route often away from the body of the field.

That may have not helped given the ground he had to surrender but King said afterwards: "For me he didn't appear to get the trip.

"I think this means that we'll be looking at the Coral Cup for Medinas (two miles five furlongs) and the Pertemps may be another.

"It's good to have those options, so we discovered something this afternoon even though both 'Choc' and myself believed Balder Succces was the one."

Medinas is 999/1 to win the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham, with Araldur 999/1 and Inish Island 999/1.
