Howard hints at Folkestone rebirth

Fresh hope that Folkestone racetrack would re-open emerged on Tuesday night from chairman of the owners Lord Howard.

Many believe that Tuesday's racing was the last that would ever be held at the Kent track but Lord Howard said: "We at Arena Leisure and Northern Racing want to get words into the council's core strategy which would see it reopen."

The plan has always been to reopen the track in a new form if that is possible and that's what we are working towards.

A plan for an 800 house development is going ahead but Howard is hopeful that the owners can get a "form of words into the strategy which will allow a reconfigured racecourse to open".

He said: "I am a race fan and have had many happy times here and want it to happen - so do others in the company. This certainly isn't the end.

"The plan has always been to reopen the track in a new form if that is possible and that's what we are working towards.

"The same sort of thing happened at Newbury and we would hope the same outcome can be achieved here.

"The whole issue is getting the words we need into the council's core strategy but there is no timetable on this situation."

Meanwhile, Richard Hughes is 1/14 to win the 2013 Flat Jockey Championship while Ryan Moore is 7/1 and Silvestre de Sousa is 999/1.
