Wigan prepared for annual fight

Wigan Athletic are set to batten down the hatches in the coming weeks as they prepare for their annual flirtation with Premier League relegation.

Roberto Martinez's side have endured a miserable Christmas period so far, with defeats to both Arsenal and Everton leaving them sat in the bottom three.

It is at a moment of the season where results are starting to be very important.

It's now six games since the Latics last tasted victory, although they can feel mightily aggrieved at some of the decisions that have not gone their way.

They could easily have been awarded two penalties in their last two outings, but Martinez has told his players they can't rely on anybody else to kickstart their climb for safety.

Wigan take on Aston Villa this weekend and will hope for a change in fortunes against a side that has shipped 12 goals in their last two games, with the Latics 17/10 to win at Villa Park, while the draw is 21/10 and the hosts are 9/5 to take all three points.

Martinez still has a major injury list to contend with and owner Dave Whelan has hinted there will be money to spend on new faces in the upcoming window.

But Martinez insists: "I am frustrated. It is at a moment of the season where results are starting to be very important. We don't rely on third parties. We don't rely on decisions to get results."
