Brian McDermott wants fighting spirit from his Reading players and the fans.

Brian McDermott claims the spirit of his Reading squad could be the key to them avoiding relegation from the Premier League this season.

The Royals boss has been under pressure of late following a run of seven straight defeats which has left the Berkshire outfit bottom of the table at Christmas - often an omen for relegation.

However, McDermott has witnessed some shoots of recovery of late as Reading tried to mount a fightback in the 5-2 defeat to Arsenal at the Madejski Stadium before then losing out to a last-gasp goal away at reigning champions Manchester City on Saturday.

You could see the spirit in the group and you certainly saw the spirit in the group on Saturday.

And, looking ahead to the Boxing Day home clash against Swansea, McDermott is looking for the players to display their fighting spirit, while he has called on the fans to get behind the team and help spark a great escape.

The Royals are 1/1000 to be relegated this season, while they can be backed at 2/1 to defeat Swansea. The Swans are 11/8 and the draw is 23/10.

Don't forget all Premier League matches are covered by the bet365 100% Euro Soccer Bonus, where you could earn a bonus of up to 100% on your returns on pre-match accumulator bets.

McDermott, who guided Reading to promotion via the Championship title last term, said: "In the last three games we haven't really performed the way I know we can.

"But against Arsenal we were three and four down and we fought back.

"You could see the spirit in the group and you certainly saw the spirit in the group on Saturday.

"You respond by trying to win the next two games. We have got Swansea at home and West Ham at home.

"We need our fans massively to be with us. They took so much credit from last year, dragging us over the line. We need them to be with us again."
