Martinez rues growing injury list

Wigan Athletic will go into this weekend's clash against Arsenal with a variety of odds stacked against them.

Boss Roberto Martinez has seen his side drop into the bottom three after a run of one point from their last four games, suggesting another relegation battle could now be on the cards. Wigan are now 1/33 to go down this season.

Apart from the first half against Norwich, we've been competitive and have shown a good level.

The Latics aren't being helped by a mounting injury list which could see the Lancashire outfit with as many as eight players missing for the match-up with Arsene Wenger's side at the DW Stadium. Wigan are 16/1 to win the game 1-0 while the Gunners are available at 11/1 to clinch a 3-1 victory.

Adrian Lopez could be out for two months with a hamstring tear, joining Ben Watson (broken leg), Ryo Miyaichi (ankle) and Albert Crusat (knee), on the long-term injury list.

James McCarthy, Gary Caldwell, Antolin Alcaraz and Ivan Ramis are all facing a race to make themselves available for the visit of the north Londoners. As you would expect, Martinez has fired out a defiant message, but admits he is now down to the bare bones.

The Spaniard insists: "When you're coping with seven or eight players missing, very important players and four in the same position, that's quite unique.

"But I have been very pleased with the rest of the squad. I've been looking at all the games and, apart from the first half against Norwich, we've been competitive and have shown a good level."
