Smalling backs Scholes for England

Paul Scholes' Manchester United team-mates are urging him to make another career U-turn and commit himself to England this summer.

The veteran midfielder continues to keep his cards close to his chest with regards to him signing a one-year extension to prolong his Old Trafford career into next season.

Scholes' decision in January to come out of retirement shocked football and he has been one of the main reasons behind United's recent surge to the top of the Premier League table.

He has been terrific for United and I don't see why he couldn't do the same for England.

But it can be no coincidence the team dropped points without the steadying hand of the 37-year-old against Wigan Athletic on Wednesday night.

And, according to team-mate Chris Smalling, Scholes would also be the perfect player to pull the strings for England at the European Championships.

England are 1212/1 to win Euro 2012 while Italy can be backed at 6/4, Spain at 4/7 and Germany at 1212/1.

United defender Smalling insists: "He has been terrific for United and I don't see why he couldn't do the same for England. I think if you are clever enough and you read the game well enough, I don't think age is a problem.

"I think he probably would have the same influence on England as he has had for United. Come the summer there may well be calls for him to be included in the squad because he is a great player in great form and I'm sure any England manager would want that."
