Relief for Mulvey

Mike Mulvey was delighted to earn his first win as Brisbane Roar coach as the defending champions won 1-0 at Adelaide United.

Mulvey, the former Gold Coast United caretaker coach who replaced Rado Vidosic in the Roar hotseat earlier this month, saw his side climb two places on the A-League ladder. Henrique netted the only goal 20 minutes into the second half to earn Brisbane's fourth win of the season, and the English-born coach had praise for his side's approach since he took over.

They [the players] know that it's just the start and there is a long way to go.

"I'm extremely happy with the boys, since I have come in their commitment has been second to none,'' he said. "They were hurting before I came in, in terms of where they were on the table.

"And together we have got a fight on our hands, we don't want to be down there.''

He added: "These players now have got a real taste for it. They know that it's just the start and there is a long way to go.

"The table doesn't lie - we are where we are because we deserve to be where we are."

Having suffered a home defeat to Perth Glory in his first game in charge, Mulvey was relieved to see the Roar get the better of the Reds in a physical battle which saw five players booked in the first half. Mitch Nichols paved the way for the goal, running at the defence and bearing down on Adelaide keeper Eugene Galekovic before cutting the ball back to Henrique to slot home.

Galekovic had produced two top-drawer saves in the first half, denying Besart Berisha's ninth minute header and making an instinctive stop to deny Ben Halloran from six metres.

United coach John Kosmina was unhappy with the manner of the goal, saying: "Mitch Nichols walked past two players and it shouldn't happen."

He added: "Things have been falling for us, tonight they didn't."

Meanwhile, Melbourne Victory are 5/6 to beat Newcastle Jets, who are 3/1. The Victory are 9/1 to win 1-0 on Friday evening.
