Kosmina positive about Australian soccer

As soon as the Newcastle Jets' owners announced that they are handing back their A-League license to the FFA, widespread concerns regarding the league's future emerged, but Adelaide United coach John Kosmina says it is nothing to be worried about.

The 2011/12 A-League season is yet to end and the competition has already lost Gold Coast United and the Jets. While the FFA has announced the addition of a new western Sydney franchise, the loss of two established clubs in quick succession is too much to swallow for the soccer fans of Australia.

I was here at the start of the NSL in 1977 and the game is much healthier now than it was back then.

While the general belief now is that the game is suffering Down Under, Kosmina is of the opinion that everything is fine. In fact, he claims that the state of soccer in Australia is in much better shape right now than it was in the pre-A-League era.

Kosmina said: "I was here at the start of the NSL in 1977 and the game is much healthier now than it was back then and certainly much healthier where it's positioned in the Australian sporting landscape as well. I remember the first season of the A-League picking up the Daily Telegraph and reading how one A-League game had attracted more people than three rugby league matches in Sydney.

"That wasn't that long ago and I think that's what we need to put more perspective on. In terms of the Newcastle issue, it will resolve itself. There are enough people in Hunter Valley who care about football. I think Nathan Tinkler might find out that you don't dirty your own nest, which is what he has done. He's really done the wrong thing by the local football community in Newcastle."

Meanwhile, the qualification final between Central Coast and Perth will be played on Saturday at Bluetongue Stadium. The Mariners are 10/11 to win, with the Glory at 3/1 and the draw at 11/5.
