Gallaway retains Jets place
Youngster Sam Gallaway will keep his place in defence for Newcastle Jets against Melbourne Victory, after impressing in his first game for 20 months.
The 20-year-old slotted in at left-back as the Jets beat Sydney FC 2-1 at the weekend. Coach Gary van Egmond was pleased with the way his defence shackled the Sky Blues as they got their season back on track.
I think he [Sam Gallwaway] did an excellent job.Gary van Egmond
Newcastle had not won since 10th November, when they won 2-1 at Western Sydney Wanderers, and had conceded five goals in their previous two games without reply. Van Egmond said Gallaway gave the side "a lot of energy" on the left-hand side of defence.
He added: "The way we play, we definitely want to use our fullbacks and get them forward and create more doubts in the defence of the opposition.
"We probably haven't had a left fullback going forward as much as I'd like on the left-hand side.
"Dominik's (Ritter) been playing well, but he got hampered by a quad strain which is still nagging him a little bit.
"But as a central defender he does a very good job; he's a good distributor of the ball.
"So we put Sammy on the left and I think he did an excellent job."
Gallaway, who played three times for Australia at under-17 level, said: "I was a little bit nervous, it had been a while since I have played an A-League game but once the whistle went, it was just a normal game for me."
Newcastle Jets are 3/1 to beat Melbourne Victory, who are 5/6. The Jets are 14/1 to win 1-0.
