Prior and Bopara set for IPL auction
Discarded one-day internationals Matt Prior and Ravi Bopara are the only England players among the 101 names for the Indian Premier League auction on Sunday.
The finalising of the squads for the nine franchises for the sixth edition of the tournament takes place in Chennai. England Test specialist Monty Panesar had also been touted to make the auction but did not appear in the official IPL list, suggesting there had not been enough interest in the slow left-armer.
Both Prior, whose base price is $200,000, and Bopara, the bidding for whom will start at half Prior's starting value, have suitors.
Prior went unsold in last year's event while Essex all-rounder Bopara does have IPL experience with King's XI Punjab.
In contrast to the low number of England players making themselves available, there is a glut of Australians willing to trek around India playing Twenty20 cricket on the eve of back-to-back Ashes series.
Australia captain Michael Clarke, released after a disappointing season with Pune last year, is one of two cricketers being auctioned for a top price of $400,000 - the other is his predecessor in the baggy green Ricky Ponting.
More alarming for Cricket Australia, however, will be the number of their current Test squad who are either already contracted to a franchise or available on Sunday.
Ten of the 17-man party that will tour India in February-March are likely to be away for the seven-week tournament while 11 more fast bowlers with a chance of making the one-day and Twenty20 squads to tour England this summer are either already in or wanting to be a part of it.
Mitchell Starc, who played for Yorkshire in 2012, is the one notable absentee - the left-armer would have been highly desirable after winning the Champions League with Sydney Sixers but wants to rest ahead of the Ashes summer.
The Delhi Daredevils are 1212/1 to win the IPL, while the Kolkata Knight Riders are 1212/1 and the Chennai Super Kings are at 4/5.
