McClenaghan comes in for Southee

Left-armer Mitchell McClenaghan will be a part of New Zealand's Test squad in South Africa as a replacement for fellow fast bowler Tim Southee.

McClenaghan, 26, is currently on tour with the Black Caps, taking part in the three-match Twenty20 series.

Southee was recently ruled out for up to eight weeks after injuring his thumb fielding in a domestic match back in New Zealand, and is touch-and-go to face England at the start of February - a tour which includes three T20 internationals, three one-dayers and three Tests.

"With Tim Southee's injury and Mark Gillespie being unavailable due to injury we have taken the opportunity to add Mitchell McClenaghan to the Test squad for the two match series against South Africa," confirmed New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson.

"Mitchell has been an impressive performer over the past couple of domestic seasons and deserves this opportunity following a promising start to international cricket during the T20 series in South Africa.

"Mitchell is a talented and exciting young fast bowler who has the ability to unsettle batsmen with his pace and bounce.

"We are confident if the opportunity arises during the tour he will perform well during the Test series."

McClenaghan has come into his own since quitting Central Districts for Auckland and claimed figures of one for 20 on his Black Caps debut - the crushing defeat to South Africa in Durban last week.

He then followed up with another wicket in the victory over the Proteas in East London.

New Zealand are 5/2 to win the Twenty20 tie between the two sides on Boxing Day, while South Africa can be backed at 3/10.
