Stuart Broad took a hat-trick as England began their tour of New Zealand with a straightforward 46-run Twenty20 victory over a New Zealand XI.

England's T20 captain took the wickets of Andrew Ellis, Ian Buttler and Matt Henry with the first three balls of the 19th over when the home side needed 51 runs off the last two overs to win the match in Whangarei.

England bowled with good variation and changes of length were key.

Chasing 187, the New Zealand XI were never up with the rate once Chris Woakes had taken the early wickets of both openers - Hamish Rutherford and Anton Devcich.

Colin Munro provided some resistance before he was dismissed for 55 by Jade Dernbach in the 18th over.

Earlier, batting first, England amassed an impressive 186-3 in their 20 overs thanks largely to Jos Buttler smashing 57 off 24 balls and Eoin Morgan scoring 48.

"England have pace in their attack," Munro said afterwards. "The wicket didn't really suit them as much today, but they bowled with good variation and changes of length were key, especially on this wicket as it was quite slow.

"We have to be a bit smarter with the batting group tomorrow, and hit the zone and do it a bit earlier so we are not behind the eight ball."

England are 8/15 to win Wednesday's T20 match between the two teams while the New Zealand XI are available at 6/4 to emerge victorious.
