Somerset interested in signing Ponting

Ricky Ponting is on the radar of Somerset, who have expressed their desire to re-sign the ex-Australia captain for this year's domestic campaign.

The 37-year-old batsman enjoyed a brief spell with Somerset in 2004 and so the English side are confident that they can convince him once again into representing them at county level.

He is a great player and I'm delighted that he is maybe interested in coming to Somerset.

The 2012 Div 1 County Championship will start from April 1 in England. Somerset are 80/1 to win the title, while Durham can be backed at odds of 200/1. Lancashire are available at 100/1, with Nottinghamshire at 10/1.

Somerset already have South African fast bowler Vernon Philander on their books as an overseas player but he is scheduled to leave them after the first two months of their season.

Once his contract comes to an end, a spot on Somerset's roster will be vacated and the English club want to fill it with Ponting.

In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, Somerset director of cricket Brian Rose said: "Ricky Ponting had a great time for Somerset and everybody is delighted to see he's still interested in playing cricket.

"I know he's retired from one-day cricket, but his first-class career is still in operation. If at some stage both our interests come together then that (signing him) would be a possibility.

"I've made no direct contact with Ricky and I don't know his intentions, but now that that's come out Somerset will be enquiring about the situation.

"He is a great player and I'm delighted that he is maybe interested in coming to Somerset."
