Nosworthy relishing Somerset challenge

New Somerset director of cricket Dave Nosworthy says he will not attempt to change too much at Taunton after agreeing to succeed Brian Rose.

South African Nosworthy, who is 45 on Christmas Day, has enjoyed success as coach with both the Titans and Lions in his homeland as well as with Canterbury Wizards in New Zealand.

A few small strategical changes and plenty of polishing will ensure we are on the right track.

And he will link up with a couple of players he knows very well in new overseas signing Alviro Petersen and Alfonso Thomas.

There is also an abundance of English talent at the club, with established stars Marcus Trescothick and Peter Trego signing new deals recently and younger internationals Jos Buttler and Craig Kieswetter pushing for further honours.

"My first few months will be spent very much 'sponging' as much information about all the players, the staff, the structures and the whole culture of the club," Nosworthy said.

"I don't believe in trying to fix something that is not broken, and as such believe that a few small strategical changes and plenty of polishing will ensure we are on the right track.

"As we all know there is unfortunately no magical switch and I am by no means a magician who will be able to ensure that our trophy cabinet is full of silverware by the end of the season.

"We need to relieve the players of as much pressure as possible so that they are able to express themselves and play their natural games in an unshackled manner."

Somerset have been agonisingly close to trophies in recent years - in 2010 they finished runners-up in all three domestic competitions while they were beaten finalists in both 40-over and Twenty20 cups in 2011.

They are 1212/1 to claim a maiden County Championship pennant in 2013, while Nottinghamshire are 1212/1 and Warwickshire are 1212/1.
