Tigers buoyed by Ponting's presence

Tasmania skipper George Bailey has said that it is exciting to have Ricky Ponting and his 'infectious' energy back, ahead of the Ryobi Cup final against South Australia.

Whenever he has played for Tassie he's always been refreshed and ready to go and he brings an energy and enthusiasm that is pretty infectious.

Ponting announced his retirement from ODI cricket earlier this week, after being dropped by the Australian selectors due to his woeful form in the on-going Commonwealth Bank Series.

A few months ago the 37-year-old was on the verge of being axed from the Test squad as well, but he temporarily shut down his critics by scoring 544 runs in the Border-Gavaskar series against India. However, he couldn't get his limited-over career back on track and paid the price.

Following the end of his ODI career, he returned to the Australian domestic circuit, where his state side Tasmania are busy preparing for their all-important Ryobi Cup final.

Bailey rejected suggestions that Ponting's mindset might not be right at the moment and reiterated the former Aussie captain has already provided a huge lift to the Tigers' title-chasing squad.

Bailey said: "Whenever he has played for Tassie he's always been refreshed and ready to go and he brings an energy and enthusiasm that is pretty infectious.

"It would be nice if the way we trained and played was the same with or without Ricky, but one of great things about him is that he lifts you.

"The intensity at training is higher and there has been a great energy and buzz in the changing rooms, particular with the younger guys who haven't played much with him.

"The couple of times I've spoken to him this week he hasn't wanted to talk about his own week, he's wanted to talk about how we've been doing and what we've been doing to prepare for the final."
