Prior hopes for Sydney lift

Matt Prior hopes to revitalise struggling Sydney Thunder's fortunes as he enters the Big Bash League this week - and enhance his prospects elsewhere in limited-overs cricket.

England wicketkeeper Prior concedes that his remaining days at international level will be as a Test specialist, although he refuses to give up completely on a recall to either the one-day or 20-over sides.

With regard to England, all I can concentrate on is scoring as many runs as possible whenever I get the chance.

He last featured in 50-over cricket at the 2011 World Cup while you have to go back almost three years, to February 2010, for the last of his 10 Twenty20 international appearances, against Pakistan in Dubai.

The 30-year-old jets down under on Christmas Day and has four matches with the Thunder on the cards, with hopes of a semi-final place already gone barring a miracle.

Thunder, bottom of the table after four defeats from four, host Brisbane Heat and local rivals the Sixers before the new year and then travel to Perth to face the Scorchers and Shane Warne's Melbourne Stars in the opening days of 2013.

"It has been a bit of a struggling start but hopefully I can go over there, and help out by putting some performances in," said Prior.

"With regard to England, all I can concentrate on is scoring as many runs as possible whenever I get the chance."

Despite his lack of exposure at international level in the shortest format of the game, Prior, who is likely to be thrust to the top of the order and could even open with West Indian blaster Chris Gayle, has applied to be part of the Indian Premier League in 2013.

"I am in the auction so we will have to wait and see," he said. "It looks a brilliant competition and provides another opportunity to improve as a Twenty20 cricketer."

Sydney Thunder are a whopping 1212/1 to turn things around, and win the second edition of the BBL. The Sixers are 1212/1 while the Heat are 13/10.
