Australia worried about rock-solid Chanderpaul

Australian vice-captain Shane Watson has said that his team must find a way to break Shivnarine Chanderpaul's unorthodox but rock-solid defence, if they want to have success in the ongoing Test series against the West Indies.

The West Indian veteran batted for six-and-a-half hours in the first innings and his resilience allowed the hosts to pile up a total in excess of 400 runs. He scored 103 not out during his stay at the crease and if it wasn't for the West Indian captain Darren Sammy's decision to declare, Chanderpaul would have had no qualms about frustrating Aussie bowlers for a few more hours.

We're going to have to find a way, because we don't want him to bat for as long as he did in this innings through this whole series.

"The way he plays, getting back and across and being able to use his hands to get the ball into the gaps, and he does it for such a long period of time, it's hard to actually find a way for him to play a false shot because of the way he's set up for these conditions here. We're going to have to find a way, because we don't want him to bat for as long as he did in this innings through this whole series," Watson said.

The 37-year-old Guyanese is now the highest run-scorer at Kensington Oval ahead of the legendary Brian Lara.

On his achievement, Chanderpaul said: "I never expected to be the person who had the most runs at Kensington, given I'm a guy from Guyana coming to Barbados. To have the most runs is a hell of an achievement at Kensington.

"It's always a very good wicket to bat on once you get in. The young fellows, they've come into their own. We've been setting the plans and the goals for the team and they've been working hard towards it. We've all been working hard towards it. I'm happy to see that we actually achieved them today."

Australia are 8/1 to win the 2013 Ashes series, while hosts England are 1/20. A draw can be backed at 8/1.
